Camp North End vs. Optimist Hall: Understanding the Difference

Two reused industrial sites, two neighborhoods, two very different visits.

Why people confuse them

Both are Charlotte destinations built inside historic industrial buildings, both have food, and both appear in the same weekend round-ups. Photographs of brick and steel windows look similar. But they are separate places, run by separate owners, in separate neighborhoods.

Location

Camp North End is north of Uptown, between Statesville Avenue and North Graham Street. Optimist Hall is in the Optimist Park neighborhood, northeast of Uptown near the light-rail corridor.

Format

Optimist Hall is primarily an indoor food hall with shops. Camp North End is a much larger campus — 76 acres, per its operator — with offices, apartments, outdoor yards and lawns, and food spread across buildings, stalls and restaurants.

Which to choose

  • A quick indoor meal with many options under one roof: Optimist Hall.
  • An afternoon outdoors, an event, or a look at large-scale industrial reuse: Camp North End.
  • Both: plan a short drive between them and check each one's hours separately.
